Treasure

#4. Friday, October 16 and Thursday, October 22, 2015

The New Orleans Film Society, Youth BreakOUT! and Pont:Productions’ Detxnola Exchange Series are proud to present The New Orleans Premiere Screening(s) of Dream Hampton’s 2015 documentary feature film, “Treasure Documentary: From Tragedy to Trans Justice, Mapping a Detroit Story” at the 2015 New Orleans Film Festival .

There will be two screenings: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 at 6:15pm at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC); THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 at 5:30pm at the Theaters at Canal Place (Canal Place Cinema). The October 16 screening will be followed immediately by a Q&A talk-back discussion with the filmmakers, women in the film, and members of New Orleans’ Youth BreakOUT!   Tickets: $8 – $12 at the CAC Box Office or online at www.neworleansfilmfestival.org

Here is a synopsis of the film: In the fall of 2011, Shelly “Treasure” Hilliard’s body parts were discovered around Detroit. Because Treasure was a Trans teen who sometimes performed sex work, the Detroit Police Department assumed that her murderers simply committed a hate crime. However, during their trial an even more despicable realization surfaced concerning the police officers’ connection to the crime. Yet, Treasure is not a film that fetishizes the murder of a trans person; instead, it’s about Treasure’s community – A diverse and affirming activist community that provided support and counseling to Treasure and her friends, and gave them something the outside world didn’t, a sense of belonging.

Come out for the book launch and signing of New Orleans at Night by Kerri McCaffety at the New Orleans Museum of Art (one Collins Diboll Circle) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. There will be wine and hors d’oeuvres. In this impressive volume of photography inspired by Brassai’s 1933 Paris de Nuit, McCaffety highlights iconic scenes such as St. Louis Cathedral, steamboats on the river, and moonrise over the Crescent City bridge. These structures come to life with rich color at night, accented by Christmas lights on St. Charles Avenue, fireworks at City Park, neon lights along Bourbon Street, and megawatt Mardi Gras floats. New Orleans at Night is an inspiring celebratory look at the magic of Crescent City after dark.

This event will also feature a very special surprise: the debut of McCaffety’s first work of fiction, A Killer, a Cocktail, & a Splash of Tango, a Martini Mystery by the author of Obituary Cocktail. A limited number of advance copies will be available. RSVP to Monique Tourres, mtourres@noma.org or (504) 658-4143.
