The Bywater is quickly becoming a neighborhood of culinary surprises with great eateries such as Booty’s, Maurepas Foods, Suis Generis and Mariza.  Now foodies can add another noteworthy option to their ever growing list of choices to dine in the eclectic burg with Oxalis of tellthebell..

Named after the largest genus in the wood sorrel family, Oxalis is an edible wild plant that has been consumed by humans around the world for thousands of years.  The restaurant is a particular find for those who relish in combining craft cocktails, fine wine and spirits with amazing cuisine.

Located in the building that once housed the local favorite Bywater BBQ, the look and feel of the entire restaurant has been transformed into a hip, stylish place for gathering.  The cocktail menu is extensive favoring whiskeys, but do offer all the other potent libations.  Their Boilermaker menu is wonderful and I urge everyone to try one.  My favorite so far has been the Lion’s Tail, a delicious combination of Bourbon, All Spice Dram, Angostura Bitters, Simple Syrup and Fresh Lime Juice.

On the menu, sharers include excellent choices for the charcuterie and house-ripened cheese plates.  Under the small plates, the Sweet Potato Poutine is to die for and either the choices of American or Korean Chicken Wings are perfect table appetizers.  The Cauliflower Steak entree rates high scores while the Steak Frites and the Oxalis Burger are more heavier and satisfying choices.

The atmosphere of this winding restaurant is comfortable and tailored to fit the menu with dark woods.  There are two bars, the large entrance one and a smaller on in the middle while both patio areas are wonderful spots for a memorable dinner.

Oxalis is located at 3162 Dauphine Street and is open seven days a week starting at 4 p.m.  For more information, call 504-267-4776 or go to www.oxalisbywater.com.
